Species Information

General:
Perennial herb from elongate rhizomes and stolons; stems erect, simple, 1- to several from the tip of the rhizome, 5-23 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves broadly elliptic to egg- or spoon-shaped, 1.5-11 cm long, 3-22 mm wide, tapering to the sheathing stalk; stem leaves paired, opposite, egg-shaped, twice as long as wide.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of terminal or sometimes axillary racemes with 3-8 flowers on stalks 2-10 mm long, without bracts; petals 5, pink (fading white), 10-14 mm long; sepals 2, 4-6 mm long.
Fruits:
Capsules, 3-5 mm long; seeds usually 2-6, black, shiny.

Moist to wet streambanks, mossy seepage and snowbed sites in the subalpine and alpine zones; infrequent in NW BC; amphiberingian, N to AK and YT; E Asia.
